Barry Sykes - 1st year Apprentice

28/5/2010
Hello my name is Barry Sykes and I am the 1st year apprentice at the Leeds branch of Barloworld Handling.

I started my apprenticeship in September 2009 having been made redundant from my previous job in April 2009.Having had the time to reflect while unemployed I decided I wanted a career in mechanical engineering and one position that particularly stood out to me was the one at Barloworld.

I was told by friends and family that Barloworld were a vary respectable company in the forklift industry and was delighted when the opportunity to become an apprentice for them.

The apprentice program consists of visiting the city of Bristol transport college, which are on block release at 2 weeks at a time. I have visited the college twice now and on both occasions have been provided with a good place to stay. In the apprentice program has a variety of training courses ranging from Health and Safety to transmissions, so far I have completed my counterbalance driver training and basic hydraulics courses.

So far I have enjoyed my time at Barloworld and I can see me enjoying the rest of my time here. I am also looking forward to developing my skills and knowledge further as I progresses. I have been made to feel vary welcome and everyone is easy to get on with.

Barloworld are a company that I would defiantly recommend to anyone pursuing a career in mechanical handling, also the moneys good too.
